STRATEGIC INITIATIVE: Expand Youth Rise Texas to Cultivate Youth Leadership and Disrupt the Generational Cycles of Harm Caused by Parental Removal (Austin, Texas)
The loss of a parent to incarceration and/or deportation (parental removal) is associated with intense mental and emotional health challenges and with lowered educational attainment and decreased civic engagement. Youth Rise Texas is an Austin, Texas-based organization working to cultivate the power of youth harmed by the criminalization or deportation of a parent so that they may heal, lead, and take action. Our goal is to intervene by building a movement for decriminalization and restoration through the network effect produced by youth leaders whose voices activate and guide the participation of their peers. Throughout the 2020/2021 school year, Youth Rise Texas will: release a report and youth-driven public policy platform; establish five high school chapters in Austin, where youth will train each other as civic leaders and activists; and begin organizing in partnership with youth to disrupt the generational cycles of harm caused by parental removal.
