Racial Healing: “This is the Work of America”

April 1, 2021

The devastating impact of COVID-19 on Black and Brown communities.

The murder of George Floyd and many others at the hands of police.

The increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans, including the horrific shootings in Atlanta.

The terrible evidence is all around us: Our country desperately needs racial healing, perhaps now more than ever.

As Dr. Gail Christopher recently put it, “This is the work of America.”

In taking on this collective work, we commit to telling the truth and overcoming the lies and false narratives that have divided, isolated, and separated us. We commit to transforming our beliefs, changing the stories we tell, and remembering that human connection is fundamental to our existence, our health, and our well-being.

“It is an imperative of our nation,” Dr. Christopher reminds us, “that we heal ourselves and that we restore ourselves to the balance that enables us to see ourselves in the face of each other.”

Dr. Christopher is co-director of Culture of Health Leaders and executive director of the National Collaborative for Health Equity.
